Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023

Companies House reforms: identity verification for directors and people with significant control, a registered email address, and tougher checks.

What it does

The Act gave Companies House new powers and duties to improve the accuracy of the register.

What block company directors need to know

  • Registered email address: every company has had to give Companies House a registered email address since March 2024.
  • Identity verification: since 18 November 2025, new directors and people with significant control must verify their identity with Companies House (through GOV.UK One Login or an authorised agent). Existing directors verify by the time of their company’s next confirmation statement.
  • Lawful purpose statement: confirmed with each confirmation statement.

Status

Phased commencement. Check Companies House guidance for the current stage before filing.
