How we write our news, guides and law library
Last updated 3 November 2026.
We write for the directors and leaseholders who run their own blocks of flats. Everything we publish should be accurate, sourced, plain English and useful to a block, not just a headline.
Sources first
- We write from the primary source wherever one exists: legislation.gov.uk, gov.uk, the court or tribunal judgment, or the regulator's own announcement.
- Every news story and guide lists its sources at the end, with links.
- When another publication broke a story, we credit it and the reporter by name. We write our own words and quote at most one short sentence, attributed.
- We say whether a law is in force, passed but not yet in force, or only proposed.
How the news is chosen
Our news desk reads official and trade sources twice a day and scores each story on how many blocks it affects, how soon, how reliable the source is and what we can add for self-managed blocks. Only stories that pass that bar are published. We cover named firms only as far as an official source or a published report goes, in neutral words.
Our use of AI
We're open about this. News stories are drafted by an AI news desk that works to our written rules, from the sources listed on each story. Automatic checks run before a story goes out, for example that it lists its sources and that its picture is licensed, and stories that pass are published without waiting for a person. We read what's published and correct it when needed. Our guides and law library summaries are also written with AI help, from the sources they list. Each page shows the date it was written or last checked.
Legal information, not legal advice
Our guides and library explain the law in general. Your lease and your company's articles often decide the detail, so they can't replace advice on your building. Our guides have not yet been reviewed by a solicitor. When they have, each reviewed guide will say who reviewed it and when. For advice, speak to a solicitor or ask us to introduce one of our regulated partner firms.
Independence
Nobody pays us to cover a story or a firm, and we don't publish sponsored content. If we ever earn money from something we write about, such as an introduction to a partner firm, we'll say so on that page.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, email hello@freeholdpilot.com with "Correction" and a link. We check it against the source, fix it promptly, and note on the page that it was corrected and when. We don't quietly change what a story said.
